Examining Codes of Ethics

NAEYC Code of Ethics
Listed are the three codes of ethics that are meaningful to me.

P-1.8—We shall be familiar with the risk factors for and

symptoms of child abuse and neglect, including

physical, sexual, verbal, and emotional abuse and

physical, emotional, educational, and medical neglect.

We shall know and follow state laws and community

procedures that protect children against abuse and

neglect.

 

I personally believe that this code will be very meaningful and needed in my profession. As an educator it is and will continue to be my responsibility to recognize when and if a child is being abused. It is also my responsibility to be the voice of the child who may be have been abused. In today's society there are many children who are suffering at the hands of their family and non family members and who are afraid to speak up. As an educator, It is my duty to know and respond to any type of symptoms that a child might display.

 

I-2.2—To develop relationships of mutual trust and

create partnerships with the families we serve.

 

As educators, we will be in constant contact with families. It is vital that educators develop a close relationship with families to work together as a team in educating children. when parents leave their children in educators care, they are trusting that the educator will keep their child safe and educate and prepare their child for their future. As an educator, I must learn and develop these close relationships early on. Families are children's first teachers and they have and know the answerer's to many questions that educators may not know on their own. It is really a partnership when educating children. There are many children who only open up with their families and may be withdrawn at school. This is a time when parent partnership is much needed. Parents know their children best and is able to help the educator in educating the child in the most individualized manner. 

 

 

P-1.4—We shall involve all those with relevant knowledge

(including families and staff) in decisions concerning

a child, as appropriate, ensuring confidentiality

of sensitive information.

 

In my future studies and teachings, I must remember that it is very vital to involve all parties that are active in the lives of children. not only is the parent and teacher involved with the child's life, but some children have doctors, psychologist, therapist, pastors, and many others that play a key role in children's lives. There are children who may have an IEP. Decision regarding curriculum or classroom assignments should not be solely made upon the teacher. This is a decision that should be b]made with the regular education teacher, parents, special education teacher, specialist, or any other person that has relevant knowledge pertaining to the child.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND PREPARATION

3. We shall be responsible for maintaining the appropriate national, state, or other credential or licensure requirements for the services we provide while maintaining our competence in practice and research by ongoing participation in professional development and education activities.

As an educator, it is important that I keep my permits up to date. Making sure that I am attending all classes and workshops that are needed to keep myself qualified to work with children. It is also important that I attend professional development courses and workshops to keep myself abreast with new information. These are the items that I must have in order to remain qualified and working with children. This is professional development which show that I am still in on going training to be more knowledgeable.

 

4. We shall support professionals new to the field by mentoring them in the practice of evidence and ethically based services.
when I was first new to the field of child development. I had not a clue for what I was doing. I was very blessed to have met a couple of older women who taught and showed  the ropes of child development. In this field educators are sharers. We are to pass on new developments and info to new educators. This allows new educators to feel more comfortable in the field. This also gives them ideas and pointers to help them along their new journey as educators. Personally, I am very grateful for all of the teacher that shared a little of their wisdom and expertise with me.

 

Enhancement of Children’s and Families’ Quality of Lives

2. We shall recognize our responsibility to improve the developmental outcomes of children and to provide services and supports in a fair and equitable manner to all families and children.

 

Each child is different and unique in their own way. Each child's outcome will not be the same but very different. As educators, it is our responsibility to know each child on an individual basis. Once we have gotten to know the children, we must educate them on an individual basis. Currently where I work, the teacher assess the children using an assessment tool called DRDP. Once the outcomes are evident, the teacher plans an individual curriculum to help each child improve where improvement is needed. In my professional career, I want to make sure that I am able to help children to succeed and improve in areas in which they struggle.
